For 13 Wednesdays throughout the 2009 Major League Baseball season the Cleveland Indians teamed with a NE Ohio non-profit organization to provide much-needed funds and the opportunity to raise awareness for their specific cause. This new initiative in 2009, titled "Fill the House for Charity" and spearheaded by the Indians Community Outreach and Ticketing Departments, raised more than $600,000 in monetary and in-kind donations for 13 NE Ohio non-profits.
The Indians donated $5 from each ticket sold by the non-profit organization back to the charity. Also, $1 from every overall ticket sale for Wednesday games were donated to the designated charity. The more people at Progressive Field to "Fill the House" on the assigned Wednesday games – the more revenue generated to benefit a worthwhile cause.
The top three non-profit organizations that sold the most Indians tickets to their designated Wednesday game day received a "bonus" check for their efforts. Finishing with the most tickets sold was the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, earning a bonus of $15,000! The American Cancer Society finished second, earning an extra $10,000! In third place and receiving a bonus check worth $5,000 was the American Red Cross.
