Indians purchase the contract of INF Andy Marte

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has purchased the contract of INF ANDY MARTE from the AAA Columbus Clippers. Marte assumes the spot of INF Ryan Garko, who was traded last night to San Francisco.

Marte has spent the entire season at Columbus where he has hit .327 (98-300) with 24 doubles, 1 triple, 18 home runs and 66 RBI in 82 games (.359OB%, .593SLG%., .963OPS). He is currently leading the International League in OPS (.963) and slugging % (.593), is 2nd in RBI, tied for 2nd in HR and extra base hits (43) and 3rd in batting average (.327). Over his last 11 games he hit .400 (16-40) w/ 3 2B, 7HR & 15 RBI to go along with a .385 (30-78) July w/9HR & 24RBI. He hit .406 (52-128) with runners on base and .427 (38-89) with RISP for the Clippers (74G 3B, 6G 1B).

Andy spent the entire 2008 season with Cleveland (.221, 3HR, 17RBI, 80G) and owns a career Major League average of .211 (108-513) in 174 games. He was designated for assignment this spring (Feb. 19) and later outrighted (Feb 25) onto the AAA Columbus roster. He wears #15.
