Indians promote RHP Zach Putnam from AAA Columbus

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has purchased the contract of RHP ZACH PUTNAM from AAA Columbus. To allow room on the 40-man roster the Indians designated RHP JASON RICE for assignment.

Putnam, 24, spent the entire season at AAA Columbus where he was 6-3 with 9 saves and a 3.65 ERA in 44 relief appearances (69.0IP, 61H, 28ER, 23BB, 68K, .233AVG) and most recently recorded 2 saves in as many International League playoff outings (2.0IP, 1H, 0R, 2K). On the year he limited left-handed batters to a .205 (23-112) average against and held Triple A hitters to a .194 (14-72) overall mark with runners in scoring position. He did not allow a run over his last three regular season appearances (5.1IP, 2H, 0R, 5K) in addition to his scoreless playoff outings.

Putnam was the club's 5th round selection (171st overall) in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Michigan. He will be uniform tonight making his debut at the Major League level wearing #44.

The Indians Major League roster now consists of 32 players with 4 players on the Disabled List.
