For Ludwick, series sort of homecoming

You wouldn't know it by looking at the back of his baseball card, but Progressive Field feels a lot like home for Ryan Ludwick. The Cards outfielder, who has played in five organizations in his professional career, appeared in 73 games for the Indians in 2003, '04 and '05.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Brad Thompson

  • #48 RHP
  • (0-2) 4.50 ERA 8 SO
Thompson found a quick hook waiting for him in his last start, but ultimately fared pretty well and he's likely to get another chance to fill in for Kyle Lohse. At this point, the right-hander is what he is. When he keeps his sinking fastball down and throws strikes, he's effective. When he leaves the sinker up and/or misses the strike zone, he gets in trouble. Thompson can be very efficient when he's pitching well.

Tribe's Carroll thriving in everyday role

Jamey Carroll is just your typical utility infielder, playing every day and now batting leadoff. Assuming he's in the lineup, Carroll figures to be back in that leadoff spot Saturday afternoon against the Cardinals.

Indians probable pitcher

Tomo Ohka

  • #16 RHP
  • (0-0) 5.40 ERA 3 SO
Ohka is taking over the rotation spot that opened up when the Indians optioned Fausto Carmona to rookie ball. How long Ohka holds this spot will depend on his performance. He has given up six runs on 11 hits in 10 innings over two appearances of long relief work, both of which came on days Carmona started. Ohka hasn't started a Major League game since June 6, 2007, while with the Blue Jays. He is 3-4 with a 5.74 ERA in seven career appearances against the Cardinals.

Pujols' pair of jacks topple Tribe (34-29) (28-36)

Cardinals 3, Indians 1

Thompson terrific

Starting in place of the injured Kyle Lohse, Brad Thompson gave up just one unearned run over six effective innings, and was supported by slugger Albert Pujols' 21st and 22nd home runs, which moved him into a tie for the Major League lead.

Bats don't back Ohka

Making his first start in two years, Tomo Ohka allowed two runs -- on Albert Pujols' solo homers -- over seven innings, but received little support and took the loss. Victor Martinez's RBI single in the fourth produced Cleveland's lone run.
