CLEVELAND -- The Indians rallied from 7-0 down Sunday and turned a possible rout into a 10-7 win over the Yankees in front of 42,573 fans at Jacobs Field.
Cleveland's Bill Selby hit a walkoff grand slam off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the victory for the Indians.
The Indians had spotted the powerhouse Yankees that big lead with the same kind of woeful early-inning pitching that caused problems for the Tribe on Saturday.
But unlike Saturday, the Indians bullpen didn't let the Yankees' lead grow greater than seven runs. A collection of relievers held firm, which allowed the Tribe to chip away at the lead.
The Indians scored three runs in the sixth inning off starter Mike Mussina, who had been cruising along at that point. The Tribe added two more runs in the eighth, and then, with Rivera in for the Yankees, the Indians completed their comeback.
John McDonald started things with a single to open the ninth. Eddie Perez followed with a single that sent the hustling McDonald to third. Chris Magruder's force out at second scored McDonald, and Omar Vizquel's single put runners on first and second.
Ellis Burks knocked in a run with a double, and then Yankees manager Joe Torre ordered Jim Thome, who had homered earlier, to walk to load the bases.
Rivera then struck out pinch-hitter Travis Fryman for the second out. But the usually-reliable Rivera fell behind Selby 2-0. After evening the count at 2-2, Rivera served up a pitch that Selby hammered. He sent the pitch down the line and into the seats in right field to clear the bases.
It was a turnaround as dramatic as any had seen at The Jake in months -- if not seasons. For after falling far behind, the Indians displayed the kind of offensive muscle that might remind people of the team's yesteryear.
Selby's homer wiped out what had looked like a repeat of the Tribe's 14-5 loss Saturday night. For the game Sunday started like the one Saturday did.
All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano once again was the one who jump-started everything. He led off the game with a single and a stolen base.
Derek Jeter then walked, and Bernie Williams singled in a run. Their scoring-fest had just begun, because before veteran left-hander Chuck Finley could clean up this first-inning mess, the Yankees got three more singles, another walk and a total of four runs.
The Yankees would add to their 4-0 lead with a run in the second. With one out in the fourth, Soriano, Jeter, Giambi & Co. sent the 39-year-old Finley to the clubhouse when they scored a couple of additional runs.
But who would have thought the Yankees would need more of those first four? Because the way Mussina was pitching, the offensively-challenged Indians -- ranked last in the league in hitting -- didn't seem as if they had much hope of erasing a big deficit.
But they did have hope. They stayed in the game, fought back within reach in the late innings and then won it on Selby's homer.
