CLEVELAND -- To accommodate Matt Ginter's callup to start Saturday's game against the Rays, the Indians optioned reliever Brian Slocum to Triple-A Buffalo.

Slocum, who was called up last Friday after Joe Borowski was designated for assignment, didn't make much of a case to stay with the big league club in two rough appearances.

On the day of his callup, the 27-year-old right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning at Minnesota. Tuesday at Detroit, he was also ineffective, allowing two solo home runs in 1 1/3 innings.

"We're still not seeing up here what we are seeing down there," manager Eric Wedge said. "It's not uncommon for a young pitcher, but he has to get to the point where he's comfortable in a big league uniform, locker room and particularly on the field to where he can relax and pitch."

Slocum was just recently converted to a reliever last month in the Minors. His only other stint with the Tribe was in 2006, when he compiled a 5.60 ERA in two starts and six relief appearances.

"This will give [Slocum] the opportunity to go down there, get some study work and get himself back up here," Wedge said.

The Indians' 40-man roster is still at 40 after Scott Elarton, who was transferred from the restricted list to the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a non-baseball medical condition, was moved to the 60-day disabled list Saturday.
