CHICAGO -- It's bright, but not too flashy. There are diamonds, but not too many. It's good luck, and that's what's important.

On Wednesday, Cubs manager Lou Piniella was wearing his championship ring from 1977, when he won his first World Series as an outfielder with the New York Yankees.

"It's the first one," Piniella said. "It's the first one I won as a player. Plus, it's not very ostentatious. I couldn't wear one of these real big ones that they have today."

His 1978 ring is similar. It is all blue with a diamond chip in the middle. Piniella has three championship rings, winning one as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 1990. What did he wear during the postseason that year?

"I wore this one in '90, yes," he said of the '77 ring. "I don't wear the '90 one too much. I wear this one.

"It's a player's ring. I gave my kids the other ones."

And maybe he'll be able to add a fourth one this season.
