GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- If nothing else, Andy Marte can get back to changing in the big league clubhouse.

But that was about the only positive development in Marte's life this week. He went unclaimed on waivers, was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus and was made a non-roster invitee to the Indians' big-league camp.

The 25-year-old Marte, who had been working out at the Indians' complex and changing in the Minor League clubhouse since he was designated for assignment last week, expressed some disappointment over the fact that none of baseball's other 29 teams were willing to find a home for him on their 40-man roster.

Marte's agent told him the Marlins and Giants showed some interest in him, but obviously not enough to clear room on their roster.

"I can't control that," Marte said. "I was waiting to see what happened. I thought somebody might pick me up, but it didn't happen."

So, what happens now? Marte remains in camp and will presumably get a look in the Cactus League games. With Mark DeRosa heading off to train with Team USA for the World Baseball Classic this weekend, some opportunities will open up at third base. But the Indians also have Jamey Carroll, Josh Barfield and Wes Hodges available to man the position.

Marte is expected to begin the year at Triple-A Columbus, though Hodges will get the regular starts at third. So Marte will probably play some third, first and DH.

It's quite a fall from grace for the guy who, three years ago, was the prized acquisition in the trade that sent Coco Crisp to Boston. Marte was supposed to be the Indians' third baseman of the future, but his .219 average, .353 slugging percentage and .271 on-base percentage in 150 games with the Tribe put the kibosh on those plans.

Marte came into camp knowing the Indians would designate him at some point, unless an injury occurred in their infield.

"I didn't think it would be that fast, before the games started," he said. "But it's part of baseball. They did what they had to do, and I respect their decision."
