Boy injured at Minors game improving

Wedge's wife delivers gifts and card from team to family

CLEVELAND -- A 4-year-old boy is recovering from injuries suffered when he was struck in the head by a line drive at a Minor League game, and he has the Indians' organization rooting him on every step of the way.

Lucas Holko was hit by the foul ball while attending a Class A Mahoning Valley Scrappers game in Niles, Ohio, on Sept. 2. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull and is in a medically induced coma at Akron Children's Hospital.

Indians utility infielder Jamey Carroll arranged for a get-well card to be signed by the team, as well as a collection of autographed bats, balls and gloves. Kate Wedge, wife of manager Eric Wedge, delivered the gifts, along with an assortment of toys from the Indians Team Shop, on Wednesday.

In an online journal entry on Lucas' recovery, his mother, Nicole, wrote of her appreciation for the Indians' efforts.

"We are honestly just blown away by their love and kindness towards our little boy, a little fan they have never met," Nicole wrote. "It just grabs and squeezes my heart and almost takes my breath away to think of how much these special people care and love my son."

Nicole also wrote some great news -- Lucas squeezed her hand Wednesday, is showing movement in his eyes and is initiating some of his breaths.

"He is so strong and doing so well," she wrote.

In addition to the support from the Tribe, Lucas also has the Scrappers' New York-Penn League on his side. The league announced Wednesday that all participating clubs in the 2009 playoffs will take up a collection for Lucas. All money raised through the collections will go to the Lucas Holko Fund.
