Farrell out of mix to be Indians manager

Red Sox pitching coach will stay in Boston next season

10/14/09 12:51 PM ET

CLEVELAND -- If you haven't done so already, scratch Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell's name off the list of candidates for the Indians' managerial vacancy.

What had been rumored and speculated for more than a week was made official Wednesday, when Farrell informed the Indians he is simply not interested in the job.

"It's an honor to be considered for the job," Farrell told the [Cleveland] Plain Dealer. "Especially for a team that I played for, my father played for and where there are so many people I know and respect. All those things considered, my desire is to fulfill the commitment between Boston and myself."

That commitment runs at least through next season, as Farrell has a clause in his contract with Boston that states he may not leave to pursue a managerial opportunity elsewhere until after 2010. It had been believed, however, that the clause could be negotiated away.

Farrell, a former Indians pitcher and farm director, was widely regarded as a top choice of the Tribe. General manager Mark Shapiro and assistant general manager Chris Antonetti never confirmed that belief, nor have they confirmed the names of any of the 8-10 candidates they are conducting phone interviews with this week.

The Indians, in search of a replacement for Eric Wedge, expect to announce the names of the final 3-5 candidates sometime next week. The team's goal is to announce its new manager after the conclusion of the World Series.
