Indians outright three to Triple-A

CLEVELAND -- The Indians did a little housecleaning Friday, taking three players off the 40-man roster. Left-handers Scott Lewis and Mike Gosling and infielder Niuman Romero were outrighted to Triple-A Columbus. That brings the 40-man roster total down to 33. Right-handers Jake Westbrook and Anthony Reyes, both of whom are on the 60-day disabled list, don't factor into that total. The Indians are making room on their roster in anticipation of the Nov. 20 deadline to have the roster set in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place Dec. 10 at the Winter Meetings. Lewis was the only noteworthy name outrighted Friday. He was the Tribe's starter for the home opener against the Blue Jays on April 10, but the 4 1/3 innings he tossed in that game were the only 4 1/3 innings he tossed in the big leagues this season. Lewis' elbow flared up in that start, and he spent most of the year rehabbing the injury. On the whole, it's been an injury-plagued career for the 26-year-old Lewis, though he did show flashes of what he can do, when healthy, when he went 4-0 in four September starts for the Tribe in '08. Gosling made 15 appearances out of the Indians' bullpen this year, and Romero was a September callup who appeared in 10 games.Anthony Castrovince is a reporter for MLB.com.
