Sizemore leads Tribe in nine-run frame

Slugger belts grand slam, Huff works three innings

03/10/10 7:06 PM EST

INDIANS 10, PADRES 5
at Goodyear, Ariz.
Wednesday, March 10

Indians at the plate: The Indians' bats unloaded on Aaron Poreda and Jackson Quezeda in the bottom of the fourth, scoring nine runs on six hits with four walks. No less than 14 men came to the plate. The big blow came on Grady Sizemore's grand slam to right off Quezeda. Every member of the Indians' lineup scored a run in the inning.

Padres at the plate: Aaron Cunningham's RBI double got the Padres on the board in the second. Everth Cabrera ignited a three-run sixth with a leadoff double off Frank Herrmann. Chris Denorfia and Kyle Blanks each had an RBI single in the inning, and Oscar Salazar added an RBI double.

Indians on the mound: David Huff, vying for the fifth starting spot, became the first Tribe pitcher this spring to work three innings, allowing a run on three hits with a walk. Kerry Wood worked a scoreless fourth, and Josh Judy did likewise in the fifth.

Padres on the mound: Right-hander Wade LeBlanc worked three innings, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Poreda had as rough a day as a pitcher can have, giving up seven runs (six earned) on three hits with three walks without recording an out. Quezada came on with the bases loaded and immediately surrendered the grand slam to Sizemore.

Worth noting: Josh Barfield entered the game for the Padres in the bottom of the sixth, at second base. The Padres traded Barfield to the Indians for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and reliever Andrew Brown before the '07 season. Barfield was to be the Tribe's long-term answer at the position, but he didn't pan out. He was cut loose last fall, and the Padres recently signed him to a Minor League deal.

Cactus League records: Indians 5-0; Padres 1-5.

Up next: The Indians drafted hard-throwing North Carolina product Alex White with their first overall pick in last year's Draft. He'll be stretched out as a starter and likely begin 2010 at Class A Kinston. But on Thursday, he'll be pitching in relief against the White Sox, as the Indians make the trek to Glendale for a 13:05 p.m. ET game.

Offseason acquisition Jon Garland will be on the mound for the Padres on Thursday, when they play host to the Cubs for a 3:05 p.m. MT game. This will be Garland's second outing this spring. He gave up a run on two hits in two innings against the Mariners in his first start.
