The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed CA CARLOS SANTANA to a five-year contract with a club option for the 2017 season.
Santana is coming off a 2011 season where he became just the eighth batter, and first catcher, in franchise history to record at least 30 doubles, 25 home runs and 90 base on balls. For the year he recorded an on-base pct. of .351 (132-552, .239) with 35 doubles, 2 triples, 27 home runs and 79 RBI in 155 games. He set a new club record for single-season home runs (27) by a switch-hitter and finished third in the American League with 97 walks while scoring 84 runs. He also finished T18th in the AL in HR, T15th in doubles, T19th in runs scored and 24th in on-base pct. Carlos recently celebrated his 26th birthday on Sunday with his second career two-homer game against Toronto.
Santana was acquired by Cleveland from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 26, 2008 in exchange for INF CASEY BLAKE. He now owns a career Major League on-base pct. of .363 (175-718, .244) with 48 doubles, 2 triples, 35 home runs and 105 RBI in 205 games (.826OPS).
