Minnesota Twins and Delaware North Companies Sportservice Celebrate National Hot Dog Month - Massive Hot Dog Coming to Target Field
The “Giant Slugger” – a 1 pound and 2 foot long hot dog – will be featured in a series of eating contests at the ballpark
As part of National Hot Dog and Sausage Month, the Minnesota Twins and concessions and retail partner Delaware North Companies Sportservice will introduce the “Giant Slugger” hot dog, which will only be available at Target Field during the month of July. The 1-pound, 2-foot-long “Giant Slugger” will also be featured in a series of hot-dog eating contests.
The first group of contestants will square off on Tuesday, July 17 at 6 p.m. near Gate 34, prior to the Twins’ tilt with the Baltimore Orioles. Another group of contestants will battle on Thursday, July 19, at 11 a.m., also at Gate 34. The respective winners of the two first contests will meet in a "Giant Slugger” showdown on Saturday, July 28 at 5 p.m. One champion will be crowned when the last bite is finished.
Created to serve as many as a family of four, the “Giant Slugger” is served in a 22-inch potato bun and topped with nacho cheese, chili, grilled onions and jalapenos. Twins fans can look for the “Giant Slugger” at a portable hot dog stand near Section 120.
The massive hot dog was created in Texas by Sportservice Executive Chef Cristobal Vasquez for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where it is known as “The Boomstick.” Since its introduction to Rangers fans, it has garnered international attention and continues to be a fan favorite at the ballpark.
The current individual record for consuming a Giant Slugger stands at 19 minutes – a time set at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington during a duel between two of the region’s media outlets.
