Indians' Hafner strengthening shoulder

Pronk could pick up bat later this week with adequate progress

ARLINGTON -- Travis Hafner isn't picking up a bat for a little while, but he is doing a little lifting to gain strength in his right shoulder area.

Hafner, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to May 26, is back in Cleveland doing strengthening activities for his right rotator cuff and shoulder blade.

"Ideally, he'd pick up a bat toward the end of this week, if he progresses," head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff said.

Pronk is eligible to come off the DL on June 10. The Indians have not released a specific timetable for his return.

Hafner said last week that he wasn't able to do much work to strengthen his shoulder this season because of the general weakness he felt in the area.

"It's hard to gain strength while you're still playing every day [with a sore shoulder]," Soloff said. "If you're attempting to strengthen a joint while fully active on it, the cycle perpetuates itself a little bit."
