Barfield to start hitting off tee soon

Return could be two to three weeks away for Tribe

ANAHEIM -- Now that Asdrubal Cabrera is back from his exodus at Triple-A Buffalo, Josh Barfield has no idea what the Indians will have in store for him when he's back to full health.

"I just want to get back out there playing," Barfield said.

He's getting closer.

Barfield, who had surgery performed on his left middle finger last month, made the trip with the Indians to Seattle and Anaheim. He began playing catch and taking ground balls last week, and, more recently, began swinging the bat. He's expected to begin taking swings off the tee in the coming days, so he could be about two or three weeks from returning to game activity.

"We'll just go as it feels," Barfield said.

Barfield is still bummed out about the timing of the injury. He was promoted from Buffalo on June 9 -- the day Cabrera was sent down -- and took over the everyday second base job, only to injure the finger on a checked swing the following day. He's been out of action since, and Cabrera, who appeared to make strides at the plate in Buffalo, was brought back up last week.
