All-Star Game, and he hopes at least a few of his players come with him. Acta is a coach on the staff of American League manager Ron Washington, whose Rangers lost to the Giants last fall in a five-game World Series.
When asked whether he had been asked by Washington to recommend any of his players, Acta said he had not yet been contacted. Each of the 30 Major League teams has to have at least one representative.
"I'm just grateful Washington asked me to go," Acta said. "I'm not now going to be recommending players to him. He hasn't [called], but I have my own guys who I've voted for already. I think [closer] Chris Perez is a legit candidate to be on the All-Star team. And we have a few other guys like [pitcher Josh] Tomlin and [reliever Vinnie] Pestano that deserve some consideration. I know they don't take that many relievers, but I'm biased anyway."
On the other side of the field, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson is also going to be a coach on the National League staff under Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
- 131 wins
- 121 wins
But Gibson said he wouldn't divulge publicly what Arizona players he felt deserved to make the game, which is being hosted by the D-backs.
"It wouldn't be fair," Gibson said.
Both the Indians and D-backs have surprised many experts by playing exciting ball during the first half of the season. The Indians held the lead in the AL Central for much of the first half, and the D-backs have flirted with the Giants for the lead in the NL West.
