ARLINGTON, TX - The Cleveland Indians tonight announced that the club has acquired INF JOHN McDONALD (#7) from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a Player To Be Named Later and/or cash considerations. To make room on the club's 40-man roster, RHP BRETT MYERS has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list. The club will announce a corresponding 25-man roster move prior to Tuesday night's game against the Texas Rangers.
McDonald, 38, appeared in 16 games (13-SS, 4-2B) for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season before being placed on the 15-day DL on May 15 with lower back discomfort and right elbow inflammation. He has hit .265 (9-34) through 10 games while rehabbing at Pittsburgh's Triple-A Indianapolis.
This will be McDonald's second stint with the Indians organization, as he spent his first 7 big league seasons with the club from 1999-2004 after being selected by Cleveland in the 12th round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. He has appeared in games at shortstop (568), second base (209), third base (127) and left field (6) over parts of 15 Major League seasons with Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit, Arizona and Pittsburgh, registering a .975 fielding pct. (80 ER/3140 TC), while batting .237 (549-2320) with 103 doubles, 14 triples, 27 home runs and 202 RBI in 970 games.
Myers, 32, has been on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation since April 20 and last pitched for the Indians on April 19 at Houston.
