Select former Cleveland Indians greats and members of the team's Hall of Fame will participate in a roundtable discussion at the Indians second annual Hall of Fame Benefit Luncheon on June 21.
The event, which will take place in the Terrace Club at Progressive Field, begins at 11:30AM and is part of Indians Hall of Fame Weekend. Scheduled to appear in the roundtable are 2014 Indians Hall of Fame inductee OMAR VIZQUEL and former teammates KENNY LOFTON, 2013 Hall of Fame inductee CARLOS BAERGA, SANDY ALOMAR and CHARLIE NAGY.
Later that evening, as the Tribe takes on the Detroit Tigers at 7:15PM, the Indians will induct Vizquel into the Indians Hall of Fame.
Tickets for the luncheon are $100 and can be purchased at Indians.com/HOFLuncheon. Included is a ballpark fare buffet and the opportunity to get autographs (one per player per person) from Indians greats in attendance. All proceeds benefit Cleveland Indians Charities.
Of the 1,700-plus players who have worn a Blues, Bronchos or Indians uniform since 1901, Vizquel will be the 40th inductee into the Indians Hall of Fame in an on-field pre-game ceremony.
Vizquel is the current all-time Major League Baseball leader at shortstop in fielding percentage (.985), double plays turned (1,735) and games played at the position (2,709). He won 11 Rawlings Gold Glove awards (nine consecutive from 1993-2001, and 2005- 2006), and is the oldest shortstop to win the award (at age 38 and again at 39). He also made three American League All-Star teams (1998, 1999, 2002).
Vizquel helped the club win two American League Championships (1995, 1997) and six American League Central Division championships (1995-1999, 2001). In 1999, he boasted a .333 batting average and scored 112 runs for an Indians team that scored a league-leading 1,009 runs, marking the most productive offensive lineup in Cleveland Indians baseball history.
The Indians also will posthumously induct radio broadcaster JIMMY DUDLEY into the Indians Distinguished Hall of Fame for non-uniformed personnel.
This year's Hall of Fame celebration will include an Omar Vizquel replica jersey that 12,500 fans will receive courtesy of Medical Mutual, fireworks (Led Zeppelin tribute) presented by RTA, and Rally Alley presented by RTA, at which fans can access games, live music and other entertainment on Larry Doby Way, north of Progressive Field. Game tickets for June 21 - which are going fast -- can be purchased at Indians.com.
